Led by the Wellesley Institute, AMHO and 14 other stakeholders put forward seven objectives for Canada’s national housing strategy.
Lacking a home due to poverty, disabilities or chronic conditions, and personal circumstances worsens mental
health and addiction issues. People who are chronically homeless or live with mental illness or addictions face some of the
worst housing conditions – which can exacerbate mental health issues. The Government of Canada is in the process of putting together a national housing strategy, and AMHO had the opportunity to provide input into this process. The submission underscores the importance of housing as a vital element in recovery and personal stability for people living with mental illness or addiction.

The submission, put forward by the Wellesley Institute October 26, 2016, outlines the following seven objectives:
- Reduce and eliminate chronic homelessness in the next decade.
- Maintain affordable rents and good repair in all twentieth-century social and supportive housing.
- Create inclusive communities by ensuring that a suitable share of housing production is social and supportive housing.
- Increase rental assistance to Canadian households to keep pace with our growing population.
- Strengthen the capacity of the non-profit, co-operative, and supportive housing sectors.
- Enhance federal capacity to work toward housing goals in partnership with provinces, territories, housing providers, and others.
- Coordinate housing priorities with health, homelessness, and other policy spheres.
