Government of Ontario’s Move to Make Naloxone Available Without a Prescription Will Save Lives

29th Jun 2016 AMHO News

June 29, 2016 – Addictions and Mental Health Ontario (AMHO) strongly supports the Government of Ontario’s move to make naloxone, an opioid overdose antidote, available without a prescription and at no cost for eligible Ontarians.

“AMHO has long been advocating for greater access to naloxone. This is a life-saving change and an important step towards addressing the opioid overdose epidemic,” said Gail Czukar, CEO of Addictions and Mental Health Ontario.

“Increasing access to medical treatment, such as naloxone, is one piece, but we also need to ensure a comprehensive strategy that provides a broad range of services and supports, including mental health and addictions counselling.”

AMHO is a member of the Mental Health and Addictions Leadership Advisory Council (MHALAC), which provides advice to the government on implementation of the provincial mental health and addiction strategy.
