AMHO to review proposed changes to Ontario’s health-care system to ensure improved access to addiction and mental health services

26th Feb 2019 AMHO News

February 26, 2019

Today, the Ontario government released new legislation that will guide the restructuring of the province’s health care system.

We are reviewing this legislation closely to determine any impact it would have, if passed, on addiction and/or mental health services in the province.

Our priority is, and will remain, to ensure that we have the strongest addiction and mental health system possible.

AMHO members have specialized knowledge and decades of experience providing addiction and mental health treatment. As this legislation is considered we will be working with the government to ensure our members’ voices are heard and represented in any health system changes. With a growing demand for addiction and mental health services and in the midst of an opioid crisis, the stakes are too high not to get this right.

We recognize the importance of transforming Ontario’s health-care system. We need to reduce wait times and improve the patient experience for people living with mental health and addiction challenges and their families. Ontarians deserve a mental health and addiction system that is as responsive as other parts of our health care system, such as cancer care, where patients know what support and services they can expect.

AMHO will continue to work with all of our partners to ensure that all Ontarians, no matter where they live or how much money they make, have access to local community-based addiction and mental health services when they need them.
